Assamese Film "Village Rockstars" Is India's Official Entry To Oscars

New Delhi: Assamese film "Village Rockstars" is India's official entry for Oscar this year. The official announcement was made by Kannada filmmaker, SV Rajendra Singh Babu was appointed by the Film Federation of India to head this year's Oscar entry selection committee, reports PTI. 

Directed by Rima Das, "Village Rockstars" tells the story of an impriovished 10-year-old girl from a tiny Assamese village, Dhuu, who dreams of playing the guitar and forming a band of her own. The movie is in Kampuri dialect. It was premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. 

Village Rockstars received the National Award for Best Feature Film this year. The film also won Best Child Artist for Bhanita Das as Dhunu and awards for editing and sound. The movie has also won several other awards at film festivals around the world.

A list of 28 films were submitted for oscar consideration, out of which Village Rockstars was picked, PTI reports. This list included Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmaavat," Alia Bhatt's Raazi, Rani Mukerji's Hichki, the Varun Dhawan film October and recent releases Manto and Love Sonia.

Other Oscar enteries from India in the recent past include, India's Oscar entries in the recent past have included Newton (last year), Court, Liar's Dice, Visaranai and The Good Road. Still, no Indian film has managed to make the final cut of five in the Oscars' Best Foreign Film category since Lagaan, starring Aamir Khan, in 2001.

India's first ever Oscar nominated movie was Mother India in 1958. Second nomination from India was Salaam Bombay! in 1989. Lagaan was third. However, none of these films won.
