Kerala Only State With 4 International Airports, After The Opening Of Kannur Airport 

New Delhi: Union Minister Suresh Prabhu and Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala inaugurated the Kannur international airport today making Kerala the only state in India to have four such airports. The airport is spread across 2,000 acres and and has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 1,800 crore. The new airport in Kannur can handle around 2,000 passengers at a time and will serve more than 1.5 million international passengers annualy. The runway length of the airport is 3,050 metres and will be extended to 4,000 metres.

Apart from Kannur, the three other international airports in Kerala are, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode

A new controversy has been sparked by the grand inauguration, as the BJP and the Congress party have boycotted the event.

While the BJP is boycotting the inauguration to protest the Kerala government's handling of the Sabarimala issue, the Congress is unhappy over the Pinarayi Vijayan government not inviting former chief minister and senior Congress leader Oomen Chandy.

Ramesh Chennithala the Congress leader contended that Mr Chandy was responsible for completing 90 per cent of the work on the Kannur airport, has accused the Pinarayi Vijayan government of "high-handedness", as reported by news agency IANS. VS Achuthanandan, the former chief minister and senior Left leader was also not invited, the IANS report said.

The government of Mr Achuthanandan had acquired the land for the airport.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan who belongs to Kannur, and aviation minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the airport in a grand ceremony. The inauguration was reportedly attended by an audience of close to one lakh, according to IANS.
