 Happy Birthday Vyjayanthimala, Bollywood's "Twinkle Toes" Turns 83 

New Delhi: Vyjayanthimala Bala born on 13 August 1936, is an Indian film actress, Bharathanatyam dancer, Carnatic singer, dancer choreographer and parliamentarian. She was one of the most biggest Bollywood stars with a career lasting almost two decades. She changed the dancing game in Indian cinema, she was the reason why Indian actresses  later on were expected to know classical dance. She was the first from all the South Indian actresses to become a bollywood star. She had earned the title of  “twinkle toes” because of her subsequent dance numbers in her films.

At the mere age of 13, she made her debut in a Tamil film Vazhkai (1949) and later on she acted in many Bollywood movies including  Bahar and Ladki. The huge success of Nagin, helped her to establish herself as one of Bollywood’s leading actresses. She grabbed her first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Devdas, in which she played the dramatic role of Chandramukhi, where she refused to accept the award citing that hers was not a supporting role.

Most of her successful films were released after she had left the film industry. After quitting movies, she continued with her dance career. Moreover, she is an avid golfer and comes from acting background as her mother was an actress herself.

In her heyday, Vyjayanthimala was the subject to many controversies, for her relationships with her co-stars. She was linked with Dilip Kumar by gossip magazines, there was a great screen chemistry between them. Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala is said to have been romantically involved with each other and almost married. However, she mentioned in her autobiography, titled Bonding  that it was a publicity stunt by newspapers to link her with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar and that she was never in a relationship with her co-stars.

Vyjayanthimala married Chamanlal Bali, after marriage she gave up her acting career. They have a son, Suchindra Bali.
