New Delhi: Today, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, warned that attempts to break her party PDP would have serious consequences, in what is seen as an attack on her former ally, the ruling BJP.

Last year, Ms Mufti resigned after the BJP ended its alliance with her People's Democratic Party citing rising security crisis in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mufti said, "If Delhi tries to create divisions and interfere like that then I think just like a Salahuddin and a Yasin Malik were born in 1987...if it tries to break the PDP then the outcome will be dangerous," as quoted by news agency ANI.

The former chief minister warned the Bhartiye Janata Party, soon after the coalition ended, that any attempt to engineer defections in her party "would erode the trust of the Kashmiris in Indian democracy".

Omar Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference, and Ms Mufti's political rival, tweeted a sharp rebuttal saying, "She must really be desperate if she is threatening the Centre with renewed militancy if PDP breaks up. She seems to have forgotten that militancy in Kashmir has already been reborn under her most able administration."

The BJP has been accused by several PDP leaders, of staying in touch with its leaders since the alliance crashed and Governor's Rule was implemented in the state. Since Saturday at least 21 PDP legislators have met Mehbooba Mufti and pledged their support to her.
