Soorma Movie Review: The Sports Biopic Of Sandeep Singh Lacks The Sporty Feel

Still Of Diljit Dosanjh From Movie "Soorma"

New Delhi: The crazy run of Sanjay Dutt’s biopic hasn’t cooled down yet and there is already a new biopic in Btown. Diljit Dosanjh starrer “Soorma” is based on the real life story of legendary Indian hockey player, Sandeep Singh.

Once again we witness a great acting performance in a biopic as the famous Punjabi singer turned actor is spot on with his portrayal of Sandeep Singh.   The movie tells the story of rise of Sandeep Singh to the international circuit and then going through a freaky accident and then rising back again. Despite having an incredibly inspiring story to tell, the movie still fails to deliver what the trailer promised.  The movie lacks the inspiring touch that it should have. The movie focuses quite a bit on Sandeep’s love angle. However, the movie lacks the heart of a sports film.

The games shown in the movie are elaborated, but there is no moment in the game that would make you sit at the edge of the seat. Director Shaad Ali fails to create the cinematic drama that is necessary for telling a story of such kind. The director has kept the narrative so plain, that at some point it starts to look documentry-ish. The movie will tell you the events that happened in Sandeep’s life, but expect no more.

The movie is packed by impressive performances by Diljit Dosanjh and Tapsee Pannu, who plays te role of Sandeep’s love interest Harpreet  . Angad Bedi , who plays the role of Sandeep’s elder brother Bikramjeet Singh is once again impressive.

Releasing in around 1100 screens, the movie will face a lot of competition from Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju, which is not slowing down at the box office.
