The Top Court Slams Centre , Says, "Either We'll Shut Down Taj Mahal Or..." 

New Delhi: Today, the Supreme Court had said in the strong remarks that the Taj Mahal is more beautiful than the Eiffel Tower and could have solved the country's foreign exchange problem. The court told the government to "Either we will shut down the Taj or you demolish or restore it."

Supreme court was hearing a petition concerning the proper maintenance of the Taj Mahal. One of the 7 wonders of the world, a 16th century marble mausoleum that draws thousands of tourists from India and abroad annually.

Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the monument in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The judges referred the famed Eiffel Tower, a tourists' favourite in Europe, as a "TV tower".

"Eighty million go to watch Eiffel Tower which looks like a TV Tower. Our Taj is more beautiful. If you had looked after it your foreign exchange problem would have been solved," said the judges.

They said that only one monument, could have solved the problem of the country. "Do you realise the loss cost to the country due to your apathy? There are so many monuments..."

The chairman of the TTZ or Taj Trapezium Zone was asked by the court to explain violation of its orders banning the expansion of industrial units in the zone.

Earlier, the Apex Court had blamed the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) for its failure to take appropriate steps to protect and preserve the iconic monuments, built by the Mughals

The court had noted, in May that the monument had became yellowish and was now brown and green because of pollution.
